Go through your grounds and make sure there isn't one lose or corroded. How old is the starter? the alternator? Any of these could be causing enough noise to cause a cranking error. Once the starter disengages, the noise goes away and the will/can be cleared.

If you haven't changed anything, it's likely one of these things.

Yeah I get that from time to time when cranking. I usually clear it and it does not come back when the car is running. If it comes back while the car is running then I would be worried.

What do you mean "I usually clear it"? This started on our car about a month ago and the only thing I have been able to do it turn off the computer and try again - usually 8-20 times. Nothing changed on the engine or wiring when this popped up, first I thought I have a bad crank trigger, replaced it, checked all the wiring back to the unit and everything looks fine. We get signal at the plug, but most of the time when cranking it to start I get no flashing red.
This car ran fine and started literally every time for a couple years until this issue popped up. We only really use the car on the weekends, but it's really annoyying when a crowd gathers to hear it when we get ready to leave an event and it won't fire :(

I have this same problem, but have found a work around. Most of the time when I start my car I will get the crank trigger intermittant failure code and a CEL, but if I key on for a few seconds prior to cranking I almost never get the code. It is kind of a PITA and my wife rarely remembers to do it. I wish I new a way to fix it where I could just crank without doing a key on first.

hmm, I'll try starting at a different interval. I have always waited to turn it over until the fuel system pressurized, but maybe if I try sooner.
