I have had many people call in using either Best Buy brand or Radio shack brand USB adapters that don't work very well. I refer them to some of the brands above and in every case so far that has fixed the problem.

We've had customers report that USB adapters that use an FTDI USB chip works well (even with TECIs and TECIIs). They can generall be found by searching for FTDI and run between $20 and $30.

There is rarely a particular brand associated with these adapters and are best found by looking for that chip name.

Here is a link to the FTDI company site where they sell completed adapters out of the UK. Others could be found out of the US.

I have had no luck at all with adapters for my IBM T61p. Tried cheapo USB/Serial, Fred recommended a PCMCIA based Quatech, now ordered and tried a FTDI chip based unit mentioned above. All work when the engines are off and fail when engines are started. Tried with various cars, Tec3,, Tec3r and TecGT. All fail the same way.

Tired of dragging two laptops to the track. Any more ideas.

Socket serial pcmia card works flawless on every laptop I have ever used. Get the card with out the removable cable.
